Thomas R. Horn was born in Ohio to John W. and Hannah Phillips Horn. They lived in both Harrison and Hocking, Ohio. After the 1860 census in Hocking, Ohio, it appears that the family then moved to Marion County, Iowa. On May 16, 1864, Thomas R. Horn enlisted in the 47th Iowa Infantry, Company A as a private. This infantry was part of what was known as "The Hundred Days Men" that President Lincoln had called in to serve so as to help end the war. Thomas Horn was mustered out of the war on Sep. 28, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa. On Feb. 1, 1870, Thomas married Ann Eliza Ross. They lived in Washington, Marion Co., Iowa and Thomas was occupied as a farm laborer. They had four children before moving to Guiderock, Webster Co., NE around March of 1876. Three more children were born in Nebraska, including my grandfather, Milo Edward Horn. On Jan. 23, 1886, Thomas Horn's father, John W. Horn, died in Nuckoll's County, NE. The family moved to Hamlet, Hayes, NE probably after 1886. Thomas' wife Ann Eliza Ross Horn, was struck by lightening and killed on June 17, 1893. The family then moved to Estell, Hayes, NE by 1900. It has been said that Thomas contracted a disease that was prevalent around this time, which affected his heart. He was in and out of three different Sanitariums: Battle Mountain Sanitarium, Leavenworth Sanitarium, and Sawtelle in California. He died in 1923 as indicated by his obituary and the Hot Springs, South Dakota National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers records. Obituary for Thomas R. Horn was born in Tuscaross Co., Ohio Oct. 28, 1847, and died in Dundy Co., NE Nov. 30th, 1923, at the age of 76 years, one month, and two days. He came to Nebraska in March of 1876 and has since made his home in this state. He was converted in 1892 and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Later he united with the Christian Church, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his departure, five sons and one daughter, one son and one daughter having preceded him to the great beyond. Funeral services were held at the house, and the remains were laid to rest in the Wauneta Cemetery Sunday, Dec. 2nd, 1923.
