Rev Walker Lewis Dies In Atlanta

Former Pastor of Court Street Methodist Church of Montgomery Has Passed Away

Rev Walker Lewis, former pastor of Court Street Methodist church , of Montgomery, died yesterday in Atlanta, his former home. He was 65 years old and had spent forty years in active service of the Methodist church, south.

Members of Court Street church and other friends of Dr Lewis in this city, will learn of his death with much regret. He filled the pastorate here from September, 1911, until the later part of December, 1911, having been sent here as a supply pastor following the serious illness of the regular pastor at that time.

He was born and reared in Washington, Wilkes county, Georgia, but moved early to Cartersville, where he married Miss Lula Trammell. Besides a widow, he left four sons, Carl, McTyrie and Dr Wales Lewis, of Atlanta, and Linton Lewis, of Macon.

Dr Lewis had been over a wide field. He had been active pastor of Methodist churches in Atlanta, Columbus, Macon, Rome, Americus, Nashville, Tenn, and Little Rock, Ark.

For years he was prominent in Georgia as director of the activities of Crittenden Home movement. Prior to his last illness he was engaged in raising funds for the Southern Female College at LaGrange, Ga.

The funeral was held at the First Methodist church in Atlanta this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The body will be conveyed to Cartersville Thursday and interred in the family plot.

The friends and relatives of Dr and Mrs Walker Lewis, Mr Linton Lewis, Mr C H Lewis, Mr McTyere Lewis and Mr Wales Lewis are invited to attend the funeral of Dr Walker Lewis today (Wednesday), April 16, 1912, at 3 o'clock from the First Methodist church. Bishop W A Candler, Dr H M DuBose and Dr W F Glenn will officiate. The following named gentlemen will please act as pallbearers and meet at the office of H M Patterson & Son at 2:16 o'clock: H E W Palmer, John S Owens, H Y McCord, W L Peel, Frank P Rice, George Muse, Asa G Candler, William Crumley, E W Martin, W L Traynham, Mr A K Hawkes, A R Hawkes, Dr I S Hopkins, R L Cooney. The remains will be taken Thursday morning at 8:35 over the W & A railroad to Cartersville, Ga for interment.
