Elijah Self was from one of the original families who settled the Clay area of Alabama, near present day Trussville. In about 1818, just a handful of years after the area was obtained from the Creeks and opened to settlement, Rev. Ebenezer Hearn came and during the next year established the Methodist society that eventually became Shiloh Church (now called Clay United Methodist Church). Elijah Self joined the church the first year it was organized.

Elijah married Catherine "Caty" Taylor, who is from a family also involved from the very beginning of this society. Three of Caty's brothers, William, Isaac, and Harris, were Methodist local preachers and circuit riders.

Elijah was a class leader and local preacher there. Their son, Nathaniel, was an itinerate preacher. He was admitted to the Alabama Conference in 1855 while two of his Taylor uncles, William and Isaac, were still active in ministry.

Their children were:
Jason H. Self
Rev. Nathaniel Henderson Self
Isaac Taylor Self
Nancy Self
Harris Green Self
John Nelson Self
William S. Self
James Higman Self
Martha E. Self
