Catherine "Caty" Taylor Self was one of seven children of George and Nancy Cooper Taylor, who came from Tennessee and settled the Cedar Mountain area in Clay, Alabama in 1817 soon after the area was obtained from the Creeks by treaty and opened to settlement. The Taylors were Methodists before they came, and after settling in Alabama, Rev. Ebenezer Hearn established the society that became Shiloh Church (now called Clay United Methodist Church). The Taylors were involved from the beginning of this society organized in 1819. Three of Caty's brothers, William, Isaac, and Harris, were Methodist local preachers and circuit riders.

Caty married Elijah Self, who was also from one of the original families who settled the area and who joined the Shiloh Church the year it was organized. He was a class leader and local preacher there. Their son, Nathaniel, was an itinerate preacher. He was admitted to the Alabama Conference in 1855 while two of his uncles, William and Isaac, were still active in ministry.

Their children were:
Jason H. Self
Rev. Nathaniel Henderson Self
Isaac Taylor Self
Nancy Self
Harris Green Self
John Nelson Self
William S. Self
James Higman Self
Martha E. Self
