John Hess, born Johannes, was the last child born to Konrad and Helena Hess in Kleinumstadt, Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany, on March 9, 1835. He grew up in Germany with his siblings, Nikolaus, Ellen, Georg, and Jakob (who died in a drowning accident).

John came to the United States in 1854, following his siblings Nicholas and Ellen to the little town of Shohola, Pennsylvania, a town full of German-immigrant farmers. He married Bavarian born Rosine Ullmer in 1857. The couple settled on seven acres of land on the Delaware River. John was also a laborer for the Erie Railroad, which ran adjacent to his property.

He and Rosine welcomed their first child, Margaret Magdalena in 1858. Another child, Conrad, came in 1862 but Rosine died from complications of his birth. After her death John invited the eighteen year old Louise Stohl into his home to help raise his two children by Rosine.

After several years John and Louise became involved with one another. They had a child, Anna Marie Hess born in 1871, before they were married in 1872.

John and Louise went on to have five more children, Louise Frances in 1874, John Jr. in 1876, William in 1879, Magdalena in 1881, and Henry in 1886.

From all accounts John was a kind man. When his daughter's husband Henry Windheim died she sent a cow on a train to her home so that they would have milk. And during a flu pandemic his grandson John Windheim lived with him in Shohola for a period.

John lived out the rest of his life on his farm on the Delaware, where he died on December 29, 1901 at the age of sixty-six. He is remembered.
