Civil War veteran; he enlisted for the Union as a Private in Company F, 19th Indiana Infantry, on July 29, 1861. This regiment was part of the Iron Brigade of the West, or "Black Hats Brigade," which fought in many of the major battles in the eastern theater with the Army of the Potomac. At the time he enlisted, he was a native of Marion County, Indiana. On December 9, 1862, Pvt. Cly was killed at the Second Battle of Bull Run.
