On Novmber 8th, 1883, James Kelly, was a laborer, working on the new south wing of the State capitol, when one of the main walls collapsed. Kelly was pulled from the wreckage, with fractured ribs, a fracture to his right leg, and "other injuries". Kelly was revived at the scene, and sent home to recover. That night, Kelly's condition worsened, until finally passing away at 9:30pm. Four other men, including: William Edgar, Bernard Higgins, & Michael Zwank were also killed in the collapse, while several other men were severely injured.
