Ingaborg 'Emma' Svien was born on February 18, 1864, in Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa.

She was the youngest of nine children born to Ole and Gunver Sorbo and the only child to be born in America. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Decorah and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in Worth County, Iowa.

Emma was united in Marriage to John Svien in March 1885, in Goodhue County, Minnesota, and lived at Lake Mills, Iowa and Emmons, Minnesota. In 1896 they moved to the McIntosh vicinity. Emma had been a resident of the McIntosh Nursing Home for twenty five years.

She was preceded in death by her husband John and one daughter Maria; four sisters Marit Sorenson-Lah, Marit Davidson, Anna Trytten, and Berit Clemmetson.
Four brothers: Gulbrand O. Sorbo, Knute O. Sorbo, Ole O. Sorbo, and Nels O. Sorbo; all of whom are buried in the Silver Lake Lutheran Cemetery with their parents, Worth County, Iowa.

Surviving her at the time of her death were two sons, Oscar Svien of McIntosh and Oliver of Winger, Minn., 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Emma passed away at the Fosston hospital at the age of 103 years and four months.
