John Apple was the son of Christopher and Mary (Baird) Apple. He was a farmer. He married Margaret Slaughterbeck on 8 November 1860 and they had nine children, David, George W., Artemus W., Charles J., William S., Mary M., John H., Martha J., and Cora M.

He served with the 111th Infantry in the Civil War. He was taken prisoner in Tennessee and held captive at Andersonville Prison in Georgia for one year and twelve days. He made great sacrifices for his country.
