Death Has At Last Come to Phillip Altland and He Will Be Buried in the Casket He Prepared.
[BY STAR SPECIAL SERVICE] – YORK, Pa., June 29 – Forty years ago Philip Altland, then a young man living in the village of New Salem in this county, constructed his own coffin. This morning Altland died at his home in the village and will be buried in the coffin which has been waiting for him all these years.
It is made of hard polished wood, procured in Philadelphia, and is of the pattern in use during the civil war. It shows the effects of time though Altland frequently made repairs to it and repainted it.
Salem being some distance from the railway funerals have often been delayed because of difficulty in promptly securing coffins. Altland, who had at one time worked at the cabinet trade resolved to be provided when death came.
