Washington "Wash" Bean enlisted in the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry, Company K, on October 7, 1864. He died in the Camp Nelson military hospital of measles.

He proceeded directly from slavery to the war against slavery. Wash Bean was owned as a slave by Asa Bean of Clark County, Kentucky at the time of his enlistment.
