A Bronx granny charged with killing her 4-year-old grandson told cops the child's battered face was caused by a fall in the tub, police sources said Sunday.

Angela Barksdale left Kevion Shand's lifeless body sprawled on her couch for more than a day before her live-in boyfriend finally called 911 Saturday evening, the sources said.

Kevion, who was wearing only sweatpants when paramedics arrived, died of blows to the head that caused a brain hemorrhage, the medical examiner said.

Barksdale, 45, the boy's maternal grandmother, had gotten custody of Kevion after his mother was jailed on assault charges. Barksdale was charged with second-degree murder, officials said.

"He enjoyed what little life he had," said Kenneth Shand, the dead child's paternal grandfather.

"March 4 would have been his fifth birthday," said Shand, whose son Jamal is the dead boy's dad. "I don't know why the mother gave him to the grandmother. ... She was a really brutal person."

Investigators believe Barksdale battered Kevion either Thursday or Friday and ignored his whimpers for help, the sources said.

When her boyfriend, who was not identified, returned to the family's Parkchester home Saturday evening, he saw the body and called for help, police said. He was questioned but has not been charged.

Barksdale initially told investigators that she dropped Kevion a few times when he was in the tub, claiming that his wet body was slippery and she lost her grip, the sources said.

Though she first seemed to mourn the child, Barksdale changed parts of her story and then refused to cooperate, the sources said. She was expected to be arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court this morning.

It was not clear whether she beat the child with her fists or an object, sources said.

Barksdale, who neighbors said battled a cocaine addiction, had been arrested three times, the sources said. She was nabbed for assault in 2000, robbery in 2001 and trespassing last year.

Kevion's 18-month-old sister, Naimah Shand, was found unharmed in the Metropolitan Ave. home.

She was placed in foster care by the Administration for Children's Services.

ACS spokeswoman Sheila Stainback said the agency had not placed either child with their maternal grandmother.

The children's mother, Melba Proctor, was locked up for assault two months ago and turned the children over to Barksdale, officials said.

Proctor, 24, was arrested in December 2007 for attacking Jamal Shand with a lamp in their Danville, Pa., home.
