Jack was the son of Seymour and Eunice Gertrude (Keller) Tranum. He was their youngest child. Jack was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps in New Guinea.

Jack and his brother Bill both died in 1993. Their remains were both cremated. Bill's ashes were spread on the Mississippi River near Hannibal, Missouri by his daughter, Bettie Schnelle. Their sister, Eva Tranum Foster McIntosh's grave is in the Grand View Memorial Park cemetery in Hannibal, Missouri. She died on April 6, 1971. There is no headstone on her grave.
