Death of Mrs. Schmanske

Mrs. Johanna Schmanske, wife of August Schmanske, died at 10 o'clock Sunday night. With her husband, she had been for fifty-eight years a resident of the United States, living for the last 25 years in West Algoma. The deceased had arrived at the ripe old age of eighty-seven years; but during the last year of her life her health had gradually been failing, general debility being given as the cause of death.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmanske had the unique distinction of having reached the 67th anniversary of their marriage, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary seventeen years ago. They were both born in a little Polish town, Mrs. Schmanske eighty-seven years ago last August, and Mr. Schmanske two years later. There they were married, and nine years later departed for the United States.

Mr. Schmanske, in his younger days, followed the iron moulders trade. Coming to this country "two years before Buchanan was elected President", as he expresses it, the couple stayed for a few months at Eureka, New York. They gradually moved westward, however, going to Buffalo for three years, to Milwaukee for seven years, to Beaver Dam for fourteen years, and then they left Wisconsin for a time. They lived at Mankato, Minn. for three years; at Winona for three years; and at Dubuque, Iowa for three years more. But twenty-five years ago they made their home at Oshkosh, where a number of their children had settled. They lived at 473 Punhoqua Street.

The deceased was the oldest of sixteen children, and lived the longest of the entire family. The last surviving sister, the youngest of the family, died at Milwaukee about a week ago.

Surviving are five children, Frank Schmanske of Fort Hudson, La.; Mrs. A. Vandells of St. John's, Mich.; August Schmanske of Baltimore, Maryland; Mrs. O. Curd of this city, and Louis Schmanske of Chicago. One of the daughters, Mrs. William Wagner of West Algoma, passed away last May.

The funeral will be held Wednesday morning from St. John's Church, Rev. J. C. Hogan officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
