Nina was four years old when she contracted Scarlet Fever. She was taken to her aunt's house to recover. Some time later she was better and was up and playing and begging to be allowed to go outside and help carry in firewood with everyone else. She was allowed to go and pick up a few twigs to carry. Once back inside she began to feel ill again and soon was put back to bed. Nina's father Twimmon was sent for but she had passed away before he got there.
