Lt. Col. Phineas Staunton was the son of Maj. Gen. Phineas and Mary Thomas "Polly" Stanton. He was the husband of Emily Eliza (Ingham) Staunton. He served during the Civil War. He was a portrait painter from Wyoming County in Western New York. He became a member of an expedition sent out by Williams College and the Smithsonian Institution to explore parts of the Andes, the Amazon River and to collect specimens of natural history. They reached Quito, the capital of Ecuador where he died of a serious tropical illness. He served during the Civil War.
