According to the original exhumation register, the board emplaced at the time of burial on his original grave read S. Russell.
The soldier who died on Jan. 1, 1865, was Sanford Russell, who served in Co. H, 149th New York Infantry. Enlisted at the age of 40 on Feb. 29, 1864; died in General Hospital #3 from inflammation of the lungs.
