Clayton Ray, 59, Lexington, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at his residence.

A native of Pulaski County, he was a son of Versa Black Ray, Lexington, and the late Thomas Ray. He founded Clayton Ray Excavating in 1969, which he owned and operated until 1999. He was a member of Nicholasville Church of Christ, Robert M. Sirkle Lodge No. 954, a Kentucky Colonel, and an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed motorcycling and trips with friends.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann McClure Ray; his mother; a son, Gerald "Jerry" Clayton and wife Sandra Ray, Scott County; a daughter, Lorraine Florence-Holley, and husband Dan, Cynthiana; eight grandchildren, Eric and Matthew Ray, Cassandra Florence, Robert Florence III, and Jeffrey, Amanda, Sarah, and Emily Holley; a brother, Marvin Ray, and wife Clara, Nicholasville; two sisters, Ellen Louise Clark, and husband Billy, Jacksonville, Florida, and Geneva Herrin, Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Fredessa Purvis.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the chapel of Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington, with the Rev. Bruce Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
