He was the son of William Bates (1720-1770) and Rebecca Tomlinson (1721-1756). After Rebecca died, William married Mary Ball (1720-?)

Part of the following bio was provided by Pamela Shafer member #46882937.

Ephraim was one of the first settlers west of the Allegheny Mounts in Fayette County, Pa.

He and his sons were among the earliest settlers of Noble County, Ohio.

Ephraim had one of the earliest orchards in this part of the country, and some of the trees he planted still stand. He built the first mill in the township, a early form of a corn cracker. Prior to this, the township depended on flower and meal upon two horse mills.

Ephraim also served in the Revolutionary War. He first enlisted in April 1777, under Captain Henry Enoch for six months at Catfish Camp, Va., serving in the 1st Battalion (Eastern Battalion) of the New Jersey militia.

He was drafted for a second tour of duty on June 1st, 1778 and served as sergeant in the "Washington Co. New Jersey, Rangers of the Frontier" and a member of Capt. Cross's Virginia Militia until the end of the war, where they were under Col. Daniel Broadheads command.

At various times, he also served under (attached to) General Lachlan Mackintosh (McIntosh), Major David Rogers, and Captain William Foreman.

Ephraim's ancestor number for the D.A.R. is A004476.

His uncle, David Bates, later was chosen as Captain of the 1st Battalion, to be promoted later to Major.

With his wife, Susanna Clark, they had several children;
Isaac Clark Bates Sr.
Mary "Polly" Bates Vorhies
William Bates
Anna Bates Dilley
Timothy Bates
Daniel Bates
Ezekieal Bates
John Bates
Amos Bates
Ephraim Bates Jr.
