Paiute Chieftan. Born to the Southern Paiute band in what is now Nye County, Nevada, he was called Teca-avats which can be translated as 'wildcat.' A warrior in his youth, he eventually realized that the waves of new settlers into Paiute territory would never end, and his people would have to establish a peace with the newcomers in order to survive, and he became known as the great peace maker. Contemporaneous newspaper accounts described him as "an acknowledged honor to the tribe and a monument of justice...just to a fault, and is a self-sacrificing and non-compromising friend...." In 1868, he signed the Camp Cadey Treaty. He became known for wearing a bright red suit with gold braid and a silk top hat. His name has been honored numerous times including the hamlet of Tecopa, California and Tecopa Park in Nye County, Nevada.
