Philip was married to Lavina Tipton. He later married his step-daughter Mary R Large (daughter of Lavina and John H. Large)
Philip and Lavina had three children together, Telitha, Leth and Theresa.

Aged 65 years. Survived by wife Mary and daughter Mrs. John H. Sweezey; step-daughters Mrs. Michael Mokler, Mrs. Annie Painter and Mrs. Lottie Moore; sister Mrs. John Good.

Fortner- Died, at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, March 3, 1908, at the family residence, 130 East Madison street, Philip Fortner, aged 66 years and 11 months.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the residence. Services will be conducted by Rev. S. D. McKinney, pastor of Elliot Avenue Baptist church, and interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Decedent was born in 1841 in Tennessee and came to this state when 10 years old, having resided in this country most of the time since then.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Mrs. John Sweezey; three step-daughters, Mrs. Michael Mockler of Rochester, Mrs. Anna Painter of this city and Mrs. Lottie Morre of Carlinville; one sister, Mrs. John Good of Chatham.
