He apparently had a heart attack while driving his car near New Hamburg, the car going down a steep hill and into a ravine.

He had farmed near Benton, Missouri and employed by the Scott County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office until he retired in 1962. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church and veteran of World War I.
