Professional Baseball Player. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, he played Major League baseball for 12 seasons as a right handed starting pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Giants, and the St. Louis Cardinals from 1917 through 1928. His best seasons were in 1919 with the Reds, when he won 10 games and posted a 2.26 Earned Run Average, and in 1923 when he won 18 games with the Phillies. He started Game 4 for the Reds in the famous 1919 World Series and shutout the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on three hits. He also appeared in relief in Game 6 and took the loss. He is best remembered for being part of one of baseball's earliest blockbuster trades in 1926 when he was sent by the Giants to St. Louis with Hall of Fame second baseman Frankie Frisch for Rogers Hornsby, considered by many at the time to be the greatest hitter in the league. Hornsby had just completed consecutive .400 seasons when the trade was made. During his career, Jimmy Ring appeared in 389 games, won 118 and lost 149. He also pitched 154 complete games, hurled 9 shutouts, struck out 835 batters, and had a 4.12 lifetime ERA. In 1925, he finished second in the National League with 37 games started by a pitcher and led the league five times in wild pitches.
