Attorney Daniel McCaskill died at 6:30 O'clock Friday morning at his home, (14 W. North street. He was seventy seven years old last September. His death was caused by chronic heart disease, following an illness of six weeks.
Though having made his home in Decatur for only two years, Mr. McCaskill was well known here, being the owner of considerable real estate in the city and having made frequent visits to Decatur, not only to look after his property interests, but also in connection with law cases in the circuit court.
Daniel McCaskill was born in Brown county, Ill, Sept, 21, 1845. He was educated in the public schools. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted as a musician in company B. Fourteenth Illinois Infantry as a drummer boy, being too young to be a regular soldier. He was a member of George H. Thomas post, G. A. R. in Chicago, but transferred his membership to Dunham Post, 141,G. A. R. after coming to Decatur.
He was admitted to the bar in Taylorville in 1870 and practiced there until 1880, when his health failed. He then went to colorado and engaged in practice there until 1896, when he moved to Chicago,where as senior member of the law firm of McCaskill & Son he practiced his profession until moving to Decatur about two years ago.
Mr. McCaskill was a member of St. James Methodist church in Chicago.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, O. L. McCaskill of Ithaca, N.Y. who is a professor of law in Cornell University. He also leaves two grandchildren.
The body was removed to Dawson & Wikoff undertaking establishment and prepared for burial. Announcement of the funeral awaits word from the son.
