The son of Phineas Marsden and husband of Mary Marsden, in 1860, lived in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted October 16, 1862, in Adams County as a substitute for Henry J. Myers, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
