Alois Ernst, son of Andreas Ernst and Franziska Weber, was born in Dewangen, Jagstkreis, Württemberg, Germany. On August 26, 1867, Alois married Barbara Uhl, in Lippach, Kreis Aalen, Württemberg, Germany. Shortly after their marriage, Alois and Barbara immigrated to the United States aboard the SS Cimbria, and arrived in New York on September 12, 1867. Although they briefly resided in Muscatine, Monona, Iowa, after their arrival, they eventually moved to Mapleton, Monona, Iowa, which is where they remained. On September 16, 1879, more than a decade after his immigration to the United States, Alois became a citizen.
