Civil War Union Officer. Heeding the call of Governor Austin Blair, this resident of Coldwater, Michigan enlisted at the age of 31-years old on April 24, 1861, and was commissioned a Captain into Company C, 1st Michigan Infantry on May 1, 1861. He was felled while commanding his company at the battle of 1st Bull Run (Manassas, Virginia) on July 21, 1861. Captured by Confederate forces, he was transferred to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he succumbed to his battle wounds on August 17, 1861.
A cenotaph was erected for him in Oak Grove Cemetery, Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan, memorial # 102137782 (current name there is "Eli Butterworth).
