Singer. She was a Jewish-Arab performer who popularized the music of her native land by singing in France and England. Blind from the age of two, she studied music, learning to sing, and to play several instruments. Following initial success, her career went into partial eclipse after Algerian independence, which she had opposed. The increased popularity of "world music" in the 1980s once again enabled her to perform in major venues. She recorded a number of albums, and a documentary of her life was made in 1991. There is doubt about her year of birth, with some sources giving 1910, or 1918.
