The son of James H. & Anna Mary (Bender) McCrae, in 1850 he was living with his family in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a laborer presumably still living in or around Chambersburg but is found neither in that census nor in the 1863-65 draft registration there. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at an unrecorded age and mustered into state service August 20, 1863, as a private with Mercereau's Independent Cavalry Militia, and discharged early to re-enlist with a federally mustered regiment. He is in the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "McCrea."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Chambersburg January 5, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. D, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865. He is in the company register as "McCrae."

His organizational pension index also claims service with the Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Militia Battalion, a unit that provided some members of the 187th Pennsylvania Infantry. He is not found in that roster and at that same time was serving with Mercereau's militia unit.

After the war, he married Mary Elizabeth Tritle and fathered Anna E. "Annie" (b. 06/22/66 - married John H. Shaffer), Dora Mae (b. 04/??/72 - married George Washington Rhan), James Harrison (b. @1874), Dazy Ellen (b. 08/12/77 - Thomas F. Cavanaugh), Grace B. (b. @1880), Jesse Douglas (b. 11/25/83), Carrie Frances (b. 01/29/86, d. 03/02/89), and Catherine (b./d. 1890). He died at his home from "carcinoma of liver and stomach."
