Mr. Billy Smith, 93, a longtime resident of West Palm Beach, Florida passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2008
surrounded by his family. Billy was born in Elberton, Georgia, and moved to High Springs, Florida with his family in 1930. He attended High Springs High School,
was an avid sports player, especially baseball. He even
took a job helping to support his family during the
Great Depression. In High Springs, he was employed at
Chew's and Sons, Bim McNair Garage, and was a volunteer
firefighter before moving to West Palm Beach in 1937.
In 1960, he established Billy Smith Wheel Alignment and
Brakes, Inc. in downtown West Palm Beach. Billy was one
of a handful of local merchants who have continued to
operate in the downtown area for close to 50 years. In
2006, he was the honorary recipient of the City of West
Palm Beach, Palm Beach Post Trail Blazer Award. With
thousands of loyal customers, Billy will be fondly
remembered for his commitment to honest and reliable
automotive repair services.
Billy is survived by his three daughters, Patti Smith,
Gloria Shaw and Bunny Hiatt; son, Mike; sisters, Lillian
and Dallys; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;
and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his beloved wife of 30 years, Marie; his brother,
Al and sisters, Jewett, Sally and Louise.
Billy's memorial service was held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday,
August 26, 2008 at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 1201 S. Olive
Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401, with a reception
that followed at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Billy and his family request for donations to be made
to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West
Palm Beach, Florida 33407.
