Taken from Our Town: Stephens Pioneer Families
Dennis Hanna arrived in Stephen in 1879 with $400 in his pocket. He constructed a small frame building, purchased a stock of dry goods at Crookston, and opened Stephens first store. This store was built on the south side of the river. When the town proper began to develop on the north side of the river in the early 1880s, he vacated his building and moved his stock to a location just north of the Home Hotel. Hanna was a great promoter for the young town and held offices as township supervisor and clerk of the school board for several years. Besides being the first storekeeper, he also published the first issues of the towns first newspaper, The Marshall County Leader. He was co-owner and editor of the paper for year and a half, publishing it on a hand press in the back of his store. Dennis Hanna was born in 1847 in New Berlin, Wisconsin, of Irish parents. He attended district school until he was in his twenties. He attended normal school at Mankato and taught for eight years before coming to Stephen. About 1890, he sold his business to O.G. Gunderson and made a name for himself in Chicago as a newspaper man. He returned to Stephen for a visit in 1922. (Editors note: His first store south of the river was the home of Mrs. Emma Anderson and her daughter, Florence, (Mrs. Lawrence Fay) for many years. The old store building was torn down only recently when the rural water system laid their pipes through the area.) --Illustrated Album Biography [1889] Stephen Messenger, 1922
