Raymond "Ray" Putnam, 86, resident of Coeur d'Alene, died July 29, 2008, at Life Care Center of Coeur d'Alene. He was born March 15, 1922, in Central Ferry, Wash., to Gordon William (Bill) and Minnie (Smith) Putnam.

In 1922, the family moved here from Central Ferry. Ray served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, he returned to Coeur d'Alene and worked for Kootenai County for 12 years before starting with the Worley Highway District, where he worked from 1971 to 1984, retiring as a supervisor. In his honor, the Worley Highway District renamed a road after him at his retirement.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Eagle Lodge, was a life member of the Elks Lodge, all in Coeur d'Alene, and a former board member of the Coeur d'Alene Homes.

He is survived by his son, Robert R. of Garwood; daughter Sue Baker of Salem, Ore.; one grandson Wes Baker; one sister Irene Grossarth of Coeur d'Alene and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen in 1996; sister Mytle Combs, and two brothers Harold and Francis (Kayo) Putnam.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene with burial to follow at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens.
