Obituary - Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, Iowa, September 15, 1905
Died. At his home in Jackson county,
Minnesota, September 7th, John
Terwilleger, aged 101 years, 7 months
and 15 days. Here ends a very long
life. John Terwilleger was a good
neighbor, an upright man, a kind father
and a loving husband. He lived far
beyond the usual span of mortal years.
Born in Sullivan county, New York
the deceased went to Illinois in 1848,
where he was united in holy marriage
to Miss Phoebe Boeman. Eight children
were born of this union, five of
whom are now living. They are Mrs.
Anna Walters, near the old homestead,
Benjamin, Frank, and John, of Idaho,
and Jackson, of California. Deceased
was a strong Democrat, never voting
any other ticket. For years Mr. Terwilleger
has been a sufferer, but he no
longer knows the weariness of the
flesh that has made life burdensome to
him in the latter years. He doubtless
realized that "for him to die was gain."
Peace to the spirit of a worthy pioneer.
Funeral services were conducted by
the Spirit Lake Baptist minister at the
West Loon Lake school house Sunday
afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Interment
was at Loon Lake cemetery. The people
of the neighborhood and from afar
turned out in large numbers to testify
to their respect for the life and character
of Mr. Terwilleger. The floral
offerings were beautiful.
