Although I would love to say that Joseph and Abigail (Daggett) Franklin are the parents of my 4th great grandfather Thomas Franklin born about 1775, I have no proof of this. After 40 years of researching, and even corresponding with Ben Franklin, there is no evidence that my Thomas is related to Joseph and Abigail. I continue to look for evidence of his parents and encourage anyone with a direct line from Joseph and Abigail to please participate in DNA testing so we can compare results. Thank you!

Thomas Franklin was born about 1775 in Mass, or Maryland, or New York. He married Hannah Sibley, in either VT or NY. She was born about 1783 in Vermont. An early Ohio history states Thomas and Hannah came from Tioga Co. NY. But I have not found any evidence of them there. Regardless, Thomas and Hannah relocated to Ohio around 1815 and were in Warren Co. Ohio for about 16 years where the family had extensive land holdings. Residing in Warren Co. Ohio in 1820 with several children, the family moved to Allen County in 1831. Thomas and Hannah had at least 11 children born to them: Eli, b1802 NY; Clarissa, b1805 NY; John, b1810 NY; James, b1812 NY; Thomas, b1814 NY; William, b1817 OH; Elisha, b1819 OH; Joseph, b1822 OH; Harriet, b1824 OH; David, b1825 OH; and Cynthia Ann, b1827 OH. Another possible son is Reuben, b1828, but he may be a son of one of the oldest sons of Thomas and Hannah.

I have been trying to prove for years, whether or not my Thomas is the son of Joseph Franklin and Abigial Daggett. I suggested this to another researcher several years ago, and now everyone is listing them as parents to Thomas. To my knowledge, this has not been proven. If anyone has proof, please let me know. Their son Thomas was born 1766 and no one seems to know where he went.

Thomas and Hannah remained in Allen County, Ohio and both died there. The large "Franklin" house-like tombstone in the cemetery, is for Thomas and his family. Thomas died about 1845. I have not found the exact date, but family notes recorded 1845. The inscriptions on some of the stones in the cemetery are too faded now to read. However, according to family notes, a stone marker for Thomas sat at the base of the large "Franklin" house tombstone, along with some of the other family markers. Some of those markers are still readable.

Son David Franklin married Malinda Meeks in 1849 in Allen Co. and they left Ohio for Indiana in the early 1850's. The family settled in Hendricks Co. IN. where Malinda died in 1865. David married a second time in 1865 to Susannah (Hensley) Spangler, born 1835 Virginia, widow of John Spangler who died in Alabama. Susannah (Hensley) Spangler came north to Indiana with her children, to be near other Hensley family. A son of David Franklin, Samuel, married Susannah's daughter Sarrah in 1871. After Susannah died, David went to Kansas, then Colorado, and back to Kansas, with some of his sons and their families. David died in Thayer, Kansas in 1898. have included David's history here, because I am unable to link David to his parents, Thomas and Hannah.
