SMITHFIELD – Mr. Donald Bernd Jr., director of public works for Isle of Wight County, died Tuesday in Riverside Hospital in Newport News after a short illness. He was 50. Bernd was hired by the county from a field of 16 in September 1983. Before that, he spent 23 years moving up the ranks at Continental Telephone Co. in Smithfield, achieving the post of customer services manager during his last five years there. He was born in Pavilion, N.Y., and lived at 1204 Magruder Road in Smithfield. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps. He attended Uzzel's United Methodist Church and was past president of the Smithfield Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Peggy Taylor Bernd; a daughter, Miss Doni Ane Bernd, at home; two sons, Dean Curtis Bernd of Smithfield and Gregory Steve Bernd, at home; and his mother, Mrs. Leona Barrett Bernd, and a sister, Miss Betty L. Bernd, both of Pavilion. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Colonial Funeral Home by the Rev. Dan E. Gray. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park in Smithfield. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
