Robert, son of William Wesley and Margaret "Peggy" Dick, was a veteran of military service during the Civil War. He enlisted August 5, 1863 and was mustered in September 16, 1863 at Knoxville, Pendleton County, Kentucky. He was a Private with Company A and B, 1st Kentucky Cavalry. He was mustered out on October 9, 1865.

Robert married twice:
1) on May 9, 1866 in Casey County, Ky to Amanda T, Randolph. They had eleven children.
2) on July 25, 1894 to Nancy Jane Matheny. No children.
