On July 3, 1881, a band of disguised men overpowered Sheriff George W. Whitesides and removed William Underwood, James Butler, Jr. and Frank Craft from their cell. They were found by citizens later that morning hanging in a tree on the west side of the courthouse.
The identities of the masked men remain unknown. Sources indicate the horse theiving business in Dade County came to a halt.
Taylor Underwood was captured in Carthage, Missouri and sentenced to hang for the murder of Greenfield (MO) City Marshal John D. McElrath. He appealed and pled guilty to manslaughter and sentenced to life in the state penetentiary.
