Professional Baseball Player. He was born Gerald Wayne Grote. He attended Douglas MacArthur High School where he was a pitcher, catcher and third baseman for the school's baseball team. After graduating from high school we went on to Trinity University where he also played for their baseball team and led the team in batting average, home runs, RBIs, runs, and hits in 1962. He was signed as a free agent by the Houston Colt .45s in 1962 and made his major league debut with them on September 21, 1963. In 1966 he was traded to the New York Mets (1966–1977). He next moved on to the Los Angeles Dodgers (1977–1978) and then to the Kansas City Royals (1981) and back to the Dodgers (1981). He retired from baseball as a player after the 1981 season. During his career, he had a batting average of,252 made 39 home runs and batted in 404 runs played in two All-Star games (1968, 1974) was a member of the 1969 World Series Champions New York Mets team and was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame. In 1985 he became the manager for the Lakeland Tigers and the Birmingham Barons. He was inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991 the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. He passed away from respiratory failure at 81.
