Memorial services for longtime McMinnville resident Dr. Colena M. Anderson will
be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church. Officiating will be the
Rev. Bernard Turner.

Private interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Orchard Park, N.Y., where her
husband and parents are buried.

Mrs. Anderson died Dec. 6, 1988, in her McMinnville home. She was 97.

She was born may 30, 1891, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Charles F. and
Frances Reppien Michael. She grew up in Buffalo.

She was graduated from Central High School and enrolled in Cornell University in
1910. She met her future husband when he was an associate professor of speech at
the university.

Mrs. Anderson taught at Central High School for two years. Following her
marriage, she spent a year at the University of Chicago.

In addition to her bachelor's degree from Cornell, she earned a master's degree
from Chicago and a doctorate from Claremont Graduate School.

She and Dr. Elam J. Anderson were married July 3, 1916. Mr. Anderson preceded
his wife in death in 1944.

In 1918, she and her husband went to China as missionaries. They taught at
Shanghai University and the Shanghai American School. Their three children were
born in China.

The Anderson moved to McMinnville in 1932 when Mr. Anderson was named president
of Linfield College. In 1938, they moved to Redlands, Calif., when he became
president of the University of Redlands.

After her husband died, Mrs. Anderson enrolled in Claremont. In 1946, she
returned to McMinnville to teach English and Far East studies at Linfield. She
also was dean of women at the college.

Mrs. Anderson wrote stories, articles and poems that were printed in
denominational magazine and The Christian herald. Her "Handbook for Christian
Writers" was published by Zondervan Publishing House.

Zondervan also published her "Don't Put on Your Slippers Yet" in English and
German, "Joy Beyond Grief" in English and Spanish and "Friendship's Bright
Shinings".

Among her hobbies was the creation of Christmas cars with original verses.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the First Baptist Church of McMinnville. For many
years, she taught the church's Conquest Class for college student.

She also was a member of the McMinnville Women's Club, the Oregon Association of
Christian Writers, the Shakespeare Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Beta Kappa and
the American association of University Women.

AAUW had granted Mrs. Anderson special honors. She also had been honored by the
Colena Circle of the First Baptist Church and by Soroptimist International of
McMinnville.

Survivors include two sons, Victor C. Anderson of San Diego and Elam J. Anderson
of Halsey; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances A. Gulick.

Arrangements are under the direction of Macy & Son Funeral Directors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Linfield College
or the American Association of University Women.
