REV. JOHN HAMILTON BULLIVANT - VICAR OF PYTCHLEY FOR 24 YEARS - 1851 - 1875

Son of John Bullivant and Mary Anne Hamilton who were married in 1813 in the Diocese of Cork and Ross, Ireland.


He was baptized on the 30th May 1814 at All Saints Church, Oakham, Rutland. Attended Queens' College, Cambridge. Rev. Bullivant achieved his B.A. and was ordained a deacon in 1843, then a priest in 1844. He was Curate of Walsall, Staffordshire, 1843-4, Curate of Gretton, Northamptonshire, 1844-51, then Vicar of Pytchley, Northamptonshire, 1851 until his death in 18175.


Rev. Bullivant married Jane Catherine Samson, daughter of Augustus Samson, a farmer, and Catherine Burrell, in 1840, the marraige was registered in Oakham, Rutland.

Catherine Mary Hamilton Samson Bullivant 1850 - 1850


The Rev. Bullivant was the Curate of St. James the Great, in the village of Gretton, Northamptonshire, where he lived with his family from 1844 until 1851. He was widowed when Jane died, aged 37, on the 3rd November 1850, six days after giving birth to their daughter, Catherine, who later died on the 22nd November,


Rev. Bullivant married Eliza Mary Laughlin on the 22nd April 1852 at St. George's Church (pictured above left), Drumcondra, Dublin, Ireland.

The 1861 Census states that Rev. Bullivant, 46, was the Vicar of Pytchley and he was living with his wife, Eliza, 34, and their three children, at Pytchley Vicarage, in the village of Pytchley, Northamptonshire. Rev. Bullivant was widowed again when Eliza died in 1867, aged 39. Then in 1871, their daughter, Mary died, aged 14.


Rev. Bullivant died aged 61.

Laid to rest on the 30th December.
