Served in Co F 62nd IL InfantryJohn Dixon was born in Coles County, IL, in 1844. His parents both died while he was still a young boy. On Nov. 16, 1863, he enlisted in Co. F, 62nd Illinois Vol. Infantry. He served mostly in Arkansas and the Cherokee Nation (Oklahoma). He was mustered out with his regiment on March 6, 1866, in Little Rock, Arkansas. His older brother Robert Dixon served three years with the 55th Illinois Vol. Infantry.

After the war John and Robert both moved to Montgomery County, IL. John married Louisa Temple in 1872. They had 5 children. Louisa died on Dec. 31, 1883. By 1886 John was living in Clay County, Arkansas, where he married Mattie Watson on May 9, 1886. They had two children; Rhoda Janie and Robert Edward.

In 1900 they were living in Venice, IL, outside of East St. Louis, where on June 29, 1900, while working at the Charles Pope Glucose Co., he fell from a platform resulting in a broken arm. He filed for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service after the accident and was approved for $8.00/month.

In 1901 John was working at the American Steel & Foundries Plant in Granite City, IL. On March 9, 1901, a boulster molding machine fell on him, crushing his left leg. The leg required amputation and while recovering, John contracted pnuemonia and died on May 29, 1901. His wife Mattie died on Jan. 1, 1904, also of pnuemonia. John's brother Robert was given legal guardianship of their two children, Rhoda and Robert.
