Attending the Korea National University of Arts in Seoul, he graduated in the first-ever class from its School of Drama. Starting off small in musical theatre and minor roles, he achieved his breakthrough in 2007 with the medical drama "White Tower." He appeared in "Pasta" (2010), "Helpless" (2012), and "My Mister" (2018). He was best known for his role in "Parasite" (2019), an Academy Award-winning black comedy thriller.

Lee's funeral was held at the funeral hall of Seoul National University Hospital at midnight on December 29, and the burial site will be at Seonyeong, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do at his family's burial grounds.
