Joseph Smith was born in the state of Virginia in 1823, and at the age of six came to Logan County, Ohio with his father, where he lived up to the time of his death. When our country was in peril, he tendered his services and was enrolled as a private in the 13th Ohio Battery under Captain J. B. Myers, on the 30th of January 1862 to serve three years. On the very day of the battle of Shiloh at Pittsburg Landing, Joseph received injuries that disabled him for life, and was discharged on the 30th of June 1862, at Columbus, Ohio.

Joseph married Millberry Ragen March 20, 1845 in Logan County, Ohio. Their marriage was blessed with eleven children:

Joseph was a man of iron-will and very firm in what he believed to be right. He died at his home on Bald Knob, Logan County, Ohio on February 2, 1890.

His remains were buried in the Mac-O-Chee Cemetery on February 5, with the funeral services being conducted by Rev James Randle, from the 30th Psalm, 5th verse.

"For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."
