Rupert is Robert in German. Although the stone says Robert, the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago records indicate the formal name of the person buried here is Rupert Schneider, but may have used Robert.

Rupert Schneider was born on Sosen, Bohemia (now Czechia) and was a tailor there. He emigrated to America in 1866 aboard the ship 'Industrie' from Bremen, arriving in Baltimore June 13, 1866 with the passenger list including Rupert Schneider, tailor, age 65; his two daughters Carolina Schneider age 28 and Francisca Schneider age 20; and Carolina's 6-year old daughter Emelie; all listed with Bohemian being their nationality and Chicago their destination.

The Schneiders soon settled in Chicago where he worked as a tailor according to the 1882 Chicago Directory. His daughter Carolina married Christian Kuhlemann in 1870 and daughter Francisca 'Francis' married Joseph Kueka in 1866, who had adopted the spelling Quocka in the 1880 Census and then Quaker thereafter. Joseph Kueka emigrated through Baltimore in August 1866 on the ship 'Reinhard' age 24 and was listed as a carpenter.

1880 U.S. Census for Chicago shows the following family living in a house at 3248 Emerald Avenue near the Stock Yards:
Rupert Schneider, Father age 80, born in Bohemia
Joseph Quocka, Head of Household, Laborer, born in Bohemia
Francis Quocka, Wife, born in Bohemia
Valburka, Dau. age 13, born Illinois
Francis, Dau. age 11, born Illinois
Joseph, Son age 4, born Illinois

Joseph and Francis Quaker are living at the same address in the 1900 Census, and after Joseph's death in 1905, Francis Quaker is living at the same address in 1910 and was living there in 1917 when she died. 3246 Emerald Avenue in the early days was about 7 blocks north of the Union Stockyards.

Rupert Schneider appears in the 1882 City Directory at 3246 Emerald Ave. as a tailor. Joseph Quaker is listed at the same address that year as being a Laborer. It is believed the family first located on Emerald Avenue in 1872.

According to the Cook County, Illinois death index, Rupert Schneider died Dec. 2, 1887. He is buried at St. Boniface Cemetery in Chicago next to his daughter Francis Quaker, her husband Joseph Quaker and two of their sons.
