Ruth D. Lunnie, 85, of Pearisburg, Va., passed away on Monday, April 14, 2008. Born November 19, 1922, in Lowrys, S.C., she was the daughter of the late William Ainsley and Ruth Atkinson Darby. Following graduation from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., Ruth served during World War II as a Second Lieutenant at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was a long-time teacher in Giles County, continuing her education and receiving a graduate degree in education. Ruth was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg, an avid gardener and member of various professional, service and community organizations. Her husband of 50 years, Francis M. Lunnie (LTC USF Ret), and brothers, Robert A. and James A., preceded Mrs. Lunnie in death. She is survived by three sons, Francis M. Lunnie Jr. and his wife, Marilene, of Falls Church, Va., William W. Lunnie, of New Haven, Conn., and Douglas Lunnie, of Pearisburg; a brother, Douglas A. Darby and his wife, Jo; five grandchildren, Angela Renee Oakey and her husband, Daniel, of Charlottesville, Va., Adam Lunnie and his wife, Samantha, of Winchester, Va., Kevin Lunnie and his wife, Ashley, of Danbury, Conn., and Sarah and Annie Lunnie, of Naugatuk, Conn.; three greatgrandchildren, Victoria and Hunter Oakey, of Charlottesville, Va., and Tyler Lunnie, of Winchester, Va.; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Mrs. Lunnie will be buried with her late husband at Arlington National Cemetery with Military Honors at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2008.
