He received the Cervantes Prize on November 24, 2014. The Cervantes Prize is the most prestigious literary award in the Spanish-speaking world. He had previously received literary prizes in 1985, 1993, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, and 2012. He is considered by many to be the greatest Spanish writer of the 21st century. He spent the final years of his life from 1997 to 2017 living in Marrakech, Morocco.
