Isaac Thurston served in Co. B. of the 9th Regiment in Ohio during the Civil War. He owned a sawmill.

His grave marker is a sawed log with the inscription.: "Saw logs 40 years, but he did not saw this one."
He was identified as a member of I.O.O.F. 202 in Delphos.

His grave marker was featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not". "The Fairborn Daily Herald" on Page 18, February 12, 1974 on the lower right of the page is a cartoon for "Ripley's Believe it or Not" shows a drawing of the side of the log with the inscription.: "He sawed logs for 40 years, but he won't saw (see) this one." The Sunday, October 8, 1972 news story by "The Lima News" - Page B13 under the title.: "Descriptive Tributes Urged on Gravestones" by David Eickholt - Isaac Thurston is included in this story quoting his date of birth and death. On one end of the log, it was stated, that one end of the log identifies his wife.
