Son of Kermit Basil Cox and Clarice Spruell Cox. Upon graduating from Bowden High School where he was a trumpet player in the high school band, he earned his Master's Degree in Engineering at the University of Georgia. Upon completion of Officer's Candidate School in Newport, RI, he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy as Ensign and later promoted to LTJG. He served on the USS Mahala in San Diego, CA and in the Seabees Construction Battalion in Da Nang, Vietnam and Port Hueneme, Ca, later serving in the Navy Reserves. He worked for American Plywood Association, University of Georgia, North Carolina State University and Georgia Pacific. He then established his own business, Engineering, Inc. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Frances Hinesly "Lizzie" Cox; two sons, Benjamin Norman Cox, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Mary Cox of Cherryville, NC and Christopher Alan Cox of Marietta; four grandchildren, Peyton Cox and Preston Cox of NC, Benjamin Carmine Cox and Mary Elizabeth Cox of Marietta; sister, Carol Mitchell of Carrollton, GA; niece, Paige Harvey; and nephew, Jon Beall.
