As an undergraduate at Montana State University in the early 1990s, I was a teaching assistant in a beginning equitation class. I got to know the school horses quite well and Buddy was my favorite. He was a bay American Quarter Horse and stood 16 HH. Due to my size, I typically go for shorter horses than that, but he and I became a team in short order. We bonded so well that I wanted to purchase him from the school when they had their next sale. Unfortunately, after my assistantship ended, a graduate student who was a misogynist and not the best judge of horses was placed over the equitation program. He made the decision to send some of the horses to the canner. Buddy was among his victims. One of my other favorite horses, an Arabian, was another. Buddy was one of those horses that you never forget. I loved him and he loved me.
