The son of John & Sarah Bentzel, in 1860, he was a farmer living in York County and stood 5' 3" tall with light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 30 as a private with Co. I, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and died of typhoid fever in the division hospital near Petersburg, Virginia.
